Andrew Newman, P.E.

Andrew Newman focuses on developing state-of-the-art performance-based design solutions to complicated fire engineering and code compliance problems. He has assisted numerous design teams in achieving owner goals and architect objectives through value-engineered performance-based systems.

Mr. Newman has written and completed comprehensive life safety and fire protection design solutions for some of the premier large-scale assembly and mixed-use structures throughout the United States. He has extensive knowledge in complex three-dimensional fire modeling, timed egress analysis, integrated system analysis, fire protection, and smoke control design. He has successfully completed smoke control designs for multiple large-scale projects, including hotels, arenas, stadiums, convention centers, and other large-scale assembly projects.

Jeremy Mason, P.E.

Jeremy Mason provides innovative solutions to challenging code compliance and fire protection engineering problems.  Mr. Mason has expertise with the various local and national building, fire, accessibility, and NFPA codes, including an in-depth knowledge of the IBC, IEBC, IFC, NFPA 101, The Life Safety Code, ANSI A117.1, MAAB, and ADAAG.  He  specializes in existing building renovation and rehabilitation and has a vast array of experience in college and university campuses, including campus centers, laboratory buildings, dormitories, libraries, and general academic building.

Mr. Mason typically develops code compliance approach reports for buildings, existing building reports that detail requirements for retroactive upgrades, and interfaces with local building, fire, and accessibility departments to ensure that projects are delivered on time and on budget while preserving the intent of the design.  He also has expertise in designing fire protection, fire alarm, and smoke control systems for many different building types.  Having completed many projects in the Boston and Cambridge areas, he understands the permitting process and can effectively discuss and resolve key project issues with the local authorities having jurisdiction.

Ben Muscente, P.E.
Associate Principal

During his tenure as associate principal for Howe Engineers, Ben Muscente has consulted on and written comprehensive code assessments and life safety design solutions for some of the premier large-scale, mixed-use structures throughout the United States.

Mr. Muscente understands state-of-the-art fire protection engineering technologies and methods needed to develop unique performance-based design solutions. These services are invaluable in value engineering and developing functional code solutions.   Examples of completed performance design solutions include value engineering of smoke control systems using complex computer modeling; means of egress design solutions using computer modeling; allowance of exposed unprotected structural columns, beams, and truss systems; and value engineering of fire protection systems.

Michael Salerno, P.E.

As a Fire Protection Consultant with Howe Engineers, Michael Salerno has been involved in all aspects of Fire Protection design and Code Consulting. Along with developing thorough and comprehensive automatic sprinkler systems and fire alarm design, Mr. Salerno is well versed in egress analysis and plans review for complex and intricate structures throughout the world.

Mr. Salerno has been an instrumental part of Howe Engineers’ Commissioning efforts for fire protection, fire alarm and smoke control systems. He has developed and participated in extensive testing programs on some of the most complicated stadiums and arenas in the United States.

Mr. Salerno is also specializes in advanced 3-D modeling for coordination of fire protection systems, smoke control system design and egress analysis. He works well with design teams, owners, and contractors to provide prompt and effective solutions for unique design challenges.
